Haven't seen a post on this yet, and since I've gotten back into it, might as well make a post.
Teleglitch is a top-down shooter with some roguelike staples, mainly randomly generated levels and perma-death. Death happens quite often, for two basic reasons: Either the game hates you, or you were dumb enough to touch the black, colorful void that's creeping out of the walls.
Given that you can kite some of the enemies into the black void, you'd be surprised at how often the latter happens. Sometimes you get pushed in by the mutants, other times you mistaken bump into the darkness. You could also weapons, of course. You start with a 9mm pistol, four small explosives, and a knife.
Easiest thing to do is to start getting used to knifing. Save your 9mm ammo for larger creatures, or ones with ranged attacks. The knife is pretty effective, swings fast, and does quite a bit of damage. The creatures you encounter in the first level aren't too threatening; they deal a maximum of 2HP worth of damage if they tag you, and you can kill them in two hits. Mutants are slow and somewhat predictable, and zombies like to charge at you with a burst of speed.
The explosives are good for swarms, if you feel like your knifing skills can't deal with a whole gang. Drop it and run, or gain some distance and toss it at them. You can also combine two small explosives into one large explosive, though I wouldn't recommend dropping that one at your feet. Can't remember if you can get enough distance from it to avoid self-damage.
You can also combine other items. The 9mmpstl can be turned into an autopstl if you have the hardware. autopstl's not that great (in my opinion), but you can turn that into an SMG, which is actually good in emergencies. You can also combine two shotguns to make a double shotgun (fires two shells at once, semi-automatic with a 20 shell capacity), or you could make my favorite weapon:
The fucking cangun. Truthfully? I wasted it there, I just wanted to show off its power.
All you need is an empty can, some explosive, and a box of nails, and you get this beauty. Sure, you hurt yourself when you prime it, sure, you could use the items on other combinations, but this is one of the most satisfying weapons I've ever seen and used.
I'm not going to give everything away, because discovery plays a big part in this game. There's many items to find and combine, quite a few computer logs to read, and many things that will kill you. If you're interested, there's a (somewhat dated, unfortunately) demo you can snag right here.
Here's a trailer for the retail version, as well. Though the video doesn't showcase it, recent updates have actually prettied up the game quite a bit, from resolution boosts to new lighting effects. Hope folks here enjoy it as much as I do.
