You have chosen A. - Raise your hand, and offer to take Ben under your wing.
You decide to give the kid the chance. What's the worst that could happen? You raise your hand firmly into the air.
'Ah. Sally. This is a...welcome change. Very well Ben, Sally will introduce you to life here at Corn Ride High School. Now with that dealt with, I'd like to discuss the serious issue of graffiti in the girls lockers..
As Mrs. Newfield settles into her usual relentless drone, you turn to introduce yourself to Ben. You extend your arm to shake Ben's hand.
'Sally. Sally Butcher'.
Ben goes to shake your hand, but instead extends his left arm instead of his right, and after realising this quickly pulls away. You exchange an awkward smile. Yup. Total loser.
The bell rings and you walk out to the yard with Ben following closely behind. Throughout history class you have learned that Ben's father is a miner, and that Ben is studying at Corn Ridge while his father works the silver mines in the mountains to the north. He's extremely quiet, and only seems to talk when asked a question or when he has a question to ask. At least he isn't annoying.
Opening the heavy steel door to the yard, you find a large group of students gathered in a circle. Pushing and shoving your way through, you and Ben finally see what the fuss is about. It's one of the first-year students, motionless on the cement, a large graze on his forearm from where he fell. Though the boy appears dead, slight muscle spasms and a regular, if slightly rapid heartbeat confirms that he is not.
Some of the younger kids begin crying and screaming, with the older students engaged in hushed whispers on what had happened. A teacher notices the commotion and hurriedly makes her way through the crowd of students. From the look on her face, you'd have though she'd faint herself. The teacher weakly, yet immediately directs all students into the main building while she calls for help. Grumbles and murmurs about having recess cut short come from all round, but the students do as they are told. However, this doesn't stop fifty pairs of eyes of all colours watching from the classroom windows. After a short time, two male teachers, the principal and the school nurse rush out to see the problem. The nurse appears bewildered, and directs the male teachers to carry Jim to the first aid office. Shortly after, sirens can be heard and an ambulance arrives on school grounds. Two paramedics hurry into the first aid office across the yard.
After what seems like an age goes by, the paramedics step out of the office, the boy in the arms of the man while the woman opens the ambulance and prepares the stretcher.
Suddenly, the boy awakens and catches the paramedic by surprise, leaping out of his arms. The boy tries to attack the paramedics, flailing his arms and trying to bite, but is quickly restrained with his arms behind his back. The boy struggles but cannot break free. He looks toward the glass windows and offers a piercing stare to the students at the windows, seemingly aware of his surroundings but somehow inhuman, his pupils a sickly yellow colour.
You look to your right while the paramedics struggle to restrain the boy into the stretcher without being bitten or scratched. Ben is standing there in open-mouthed shock, while the rest of the students hurry to get their phones out of their bags and film the commotion. As the ambulance leaves, you hear one student brag that he already has a video uploaded to Youtube.
You hurry back to class with Ben to find that the school will be closing early in light of the day's events, however Mrs. Newfield does not seem excited to let you go. Walking out of the building, Ben taps you on the shoulder.
'Listen, uh.. I understand if you say no, but well, usually my dad doesn't finish work until late and I was wondering if I could hang out at your place for a few hours, m-maybe?'
Decision Time!
A. Let Ben come over. He might finally let you get to know him.
B. Tell Ben your mother doesn't like you having boys over, but you could always go to his house instead.
C. Tell Ben your mother is expecting you and that you have a lot of homework to catch up on. Perhaps another time.
