I think you are missing my point: The MG is supposed to be a very powerful gun, capable of keeping a big amount of people down in its line of fire and taking down idiots who go running around in your line of sight easily. Do you really want to make it an even more capable monster by also giving it equal or near-equal close-range combat capabilities? The sides of the equation just don't match.

Do you really want to make it an even more capable monster by also giving it equal or near-equal close-range combat capabilities? The sides of the equation just don't match.I am not saying make it an OP weapon, all I'm saying is, give me a way to defend myself, at least a little if they are in my face or at least like 5 or 10 feet in front of me where I don't have the time or the room (position, because I can't lay down and I need a block in front of me to set it up, to set it up and fire at the enemy, or at least give me enough time to get out of there or gain range on him or something like that, even for running. So this comes down to a system of MG fortifications and tunnels/trenches that can help a machine gunner, but that will take time to make, I mean, I'd just make a 3x3x3 hole (with a stair) and dig a some sort of trench behind it or tunnel so I can get away but he can kill me while I tear down the gun.
My point: as you say, the MG is a very powerful ranged support weapon that can lay suppressive fire and that is it's job but machine gunner is also the most vulnerable guy on the field because he can get sniped, get shot by a rifle, get shot by anything that is out of his range or out of his sight or is right in his face or is reloading or is setting up/tearing down the gun, that is why he needs a sidearm more than a bit lowered recoil when no deployed, and again I did not mean Rambo style I mean like you get get 1 or 2, maybe 3 bullets into the guy before the gun goes nutjob into the air, you know what I'm talking about if you've ever played Day of Defeat with a heavy machine gun. Now, ammo, this brings us to our next balance issue, how much ammo will the MG have (oh and it will also have the longest reload time of all weapons), like 300 - 500, but it has to have minimum 300 rounds, and I'm also not sure how much damage it will be able to do to blocks, but I mean if it's that vulnerable the enemy team should pay for letting him set up and fire at them, again, a sniper can easily take out the machine gunner, or a mortar, if it's not in some sort of fortification.

if they are up in your face, there are a few reasons why: you failed to kill them, and your teammates failed to kill them, and you failed to use melee (spade)
it means you suck at the game and you should die if you didn't kill him already (as you should be locking down "lanes").
if you want to use it, you'll need a block to put the gun on, and you should pick somewhere tactical, with low chances of getting flanked.
and please note, you're not alone against the other team, you have team mates to use other loadouts, such as a sniper loadout.
oh and snipers are meant to kill (or severely injure) with one shot, so they can easily kill anyone, not just machine gunners

Yikes. Not to incite a flamewar, but I gotta respectfully disagree with most of the suggestions from the past day. Maybe I'm too traditional, but one of the reasons I love AoS is because of it's simplicity as opposed to other shooters. No loadouts, no sidearms, no vehicles, just grab a gun and go.

Personally I think an 'OpenSpades master version' for each version of OpenSpades, where there are lots of weapons loaded in, but on a customisable pysnip like server database, you could easily edit which guns you want in and which out and how much damage they do, I may sound a bit silly but this could work.

On TC, when a tent is getting captured. It should blink on the minimap. So you can quickly go to stop it from being taken.

Ok, here is what I think would be better for all of us:
There would be perhaps 4 categories: Secondary, Primary, Utility and Extended, with Extended things taking up 2 slots.
PRIMARY:
Rifle: The good old Rifle, not much to say here.
SMG: The same SMG, but range most likely decreased, similar to the .76 SMG.
RPG: A Rocket Launcher with perhaps 3 shots in it? Used to destroy transport vehicles (will get to that later)
Shotgun: The good old shotgun!
LMG: A Machine gun that has crazy recoil, and low firerate. Only useful if using the bipod it comes with. If not, good luck hitting the broad side of a barn.
I didn't add an AR because I don't really see how it would truly fit into the picture in my head atm. Perhaps it should be considered? I just don't see it being balanced in my opinion.
I don't see the Sniper Rifle Either, I mean, it would just steal the Carbines thunder really.
Secondary:
Pistol: A standard Pistol, I don't know which kind of pistol it should be modeled after, but I personally would like the M1911.
Mine: A Mine...
Barbed Wire: This would be useful for defending front lines.
Steel Blocks: This was something I was thinking about. Perhaps everyone has the standard blocks, but if you give up yourSecondary and Utility slots, perhaps you could have 50 steel blocks that take more hits to be broken? Would be a fantastic way for fending off the RPG Psychoes.
Utility:
Ammo kits
Medic Kits
Binoculars
Beacons: Now I think this would be a cool one, a beacon that highlights a point on the map. Maybe to show where a stash of enemy deuces are hiding? YOu have to put it down however, but it would be a good system nonetheless.
Extended:
MG: I for one, think the MG should take up your primary AND secondary slots, mostly because it would be kind of OP to have it, and a pistol. It should only be used for support, so without a secondary weapon, you need allies.
Mortar: The exact same thing for mortars as well.
Vehicles:
jeep: Just a regular Jeep that can pick up about 4 people. No guns, no weapons on it besides the ones you are carrying. It's simple transport.
Helicopter: A jeep in the sky. Good for parachuting onto objectives.
In my opinions, there should be no vehicles that actually can put up a fight, they should just be for transport.

Out of all of those I think smoke grenades that give away positions would work, it would only be seen on OpenSpades clients though.
