I think stack, learn_more ... are working on a fork of the .75/.76 master server so OS-only servers would be possible.

I don't agree with the separate OpenSpades server list, we don't need to split the community in three groups, we already have a problem with two, don't we?

How could we change server side stuff, for example new weapons ?

Not separate per se, but rather easily identified so a user can distinguish between different types of servers. Even better would be to just automate it for the user.

Ideally, there would be something like a separate PySnip fork for OpenSpades servers that wish to extend the protocol. OpenSpades servers should be separated from Voxlap servers on the serverlist, to help avoid confusion.

This is where the master server suggestion comes into play. It's something that has been discussed before and I have no objection to it. The master server is very flexible and I could easily add an extra flag check for OpenSpades servers. This way we could differentiate between the two flavors of servers and go from there.
Any progress ?

We could use some good trailers for openspades.

In contrast, 0.76 has had nowhere near the amount of exposure so we can't say for certain which one is "better" than the other...

In regards to Iceball...

Iceball, in my opinion, is not a viable alternative. It has basically turned into something separate from Ace of Spades. There seems to be no clear sense of direction or design. (Reinventing the wheel doesn't count, nor does delegating over insignificant details/micro-optimizations). New users are easily discouraged by the intentional roadblocks left in place to keep them out. There is little to no sense of support for said users. The transition from Voxlap to Iceball is far from seamless. With new protocols/file formats etc, users are playing a new game. This was something I warned about early on and is a big reason why Iceball has not been adopted. Sure, it might seem like a bit of an inhibition at first, but nobody is going to adopt it unless there is a seamless transition.
The same could be said about .76 Iceball really. I think the majority of people would be willing to re-learn the game if it was inherently better. But nobody really knows if it's better or not, because nobody has played it.

I have been out of the loop for so long that I have virtually no idea what OpenSpades is. But if it indeed does entail higher system requirements, then you can count me and d lot of other users out.

Still no os servers ;__;.

Having separate Openspades servers with the ability to extend the protocol, would be exactly what we need. Currently it's quite difficult to match up with people on OS when using OS. This would solve that.

I think it would breathe a lot of life back into this community. A hope for something new.

I'm happy to keep working on the OS only servers if Stack does two things. 1) An OS master server. 2) An authentication API with the forum. So we can link players to forum accounts. Obviously this wouldn't be required of all clients but would help in many aspects.
