That could have been one of the reasons, but I believe they were really trying to make a 3D worms, we have jetpacks, drill guns, tnt with visible timers, mini guns, rpg's etc. all things u'd find in worms...

It would do jagex good if a HUGE amount of people did a rade on the forums about how good the old times were and how so many things in the game now are s*** house. Seriously! they KNOW we hate it but they need it crammed down there necks. They need it so that everybody about to buy the game knows that it isn't a good game. They have to realize that they wont get very far with the game they have now. They LITERALLY have to change everything.
