I think that instead of classifying weapons as close-range, medium-range and etc we should arrange them as either offensive or defensive weapons.
First, do away with the SMG. The AR is an automatic weapon already, and the Shotgun is a great close-quarters weapon.
The offensive weapons first. They are:
Semi-automatic Rifle: Similar to the one now. Medium to long range engagements. Complements the AR with fire support.
AR: Front-line weapon, automatic. Close to medium range engagements.
Defensive weapons. Meant to be used when your team is getting attacked and needs to mount a defensive line. They are:
LMG: Automatic, non-mobile fire support weapon. Meant to be mounted in gun emplacements and used to defend a building or give fire support.

But I don't think it will get to that level... its essentially a flying grenade, with prob very low ammo.

I feel like having a LMG and an assault rifle is kind of pointless, like having an SMG and shotgun. LMG should be some kind of static Machinegun, which most of you guys are giving it the stats of, just misnaming it.
Honestly I feel having both an Assault Rifle and the semi is kind of pointless as well, were kind of mixing lots of weapons that were never really used in the same era together.

Why should we remove something we already have ? (smg)
Imo, smg - lmg would better than lmg - assault rifle because who would take a lmg if he could take a ar ??
The choice between lmg and smg would be more usefull because you have to consider the situation you are in at the moment. You can't really make something wrong by choosing the ar because there aren't big disadvantages of it.
I fear if we give the player the possibility of an ar, EVERYONE will use it in the end.

You are somewhat right about the AR, but honestly, LMG will rule defensive, Rifles will rule long range, and SMGs and shotguns will rule CQC. So the only valid option for this is medium range, and it can't really go onto any other gun's purpose properly. SMGs will kill it in CQC (higher fire rate), LMGs are better for cover and defense (Large Mag), and it obviously cannot be used for sniping. No one will choose it if they have a certain job they want to do, it'll turn into a jack of all trades weapon.
So the AR will be fine.

Now, going back to AoS, I think the AR, if introduced, should serve as a close to medium range offensive weapon. It would be the front line weapon, receiving support from Semi-automatic Rifles at medium and long ranges.
