There's also this cool game called Ace of Spades. You can play it on a site called Build And Shoot. It works on pretty much any computer!

The entire Quake series. Quake 2&4 not recommended.
Quake 1: Tons of server and a ton of people. Just find where are the servers at. Start from quakeone.com.
Quake 3 Arena: Same as Quake Live, but just as fun, alot lighter.
Quake Live: Modified Quake 3 Arena Gold to run on browsers.

What the hell? Play 4 free uses the same engine as BATTLEFIELD 2. Not Bad Company 2!
Yes it is a shit game and has terrible graphics even when turned on high, but it runs on old PCs and thats the only "selling" point it has.

If BFP4F used BC2's engine it would look a helluva lot better and it would play on a helluva lot less systems...it would still be a terrible game though.

Battlefield 1942 is free on Origin, give that a try. You should be able to run it.

All the games I listed are multiplayer games. CoD as you probably know, also has singleplayer.

If you're talking specifically about the first Quake, ok, not many (but some) people play it. Quake 3 however is still one of the most played multiplayer games, and it was released over 10 years ago.
@Op: As well as Quake (Quake 3 would probably be the easiest to use, but Quake 2 would be easily playable too), I'd recommend Doom, using the Zandronum engine, which you can find out about in this thread I made on another fourm: http://www.teamavolition.com/topic/14607-doom/

Everyone has said TF2, Quake, BF2, etc.
So let me add: Team Fortress Classic!
Requirements: I'll just say that I have integrated graphics, and I've passed the 450 FPS mark before. You should be able to run it at anywhere from 60-200 FPS on max graphics. The only downsides are the steep learning curve and the $5.00 needed on Steam.

Before I read this thread, I didn't know other people still played DOS games.

Try Freelancer, maybe there are still some living servers.
