Stack has modded the master server to support multiple versions. Grease is heading Iceball, a total remake with new server protocol but tones of excellent new modding features. I am working on porting and improving Voxlap, would could lead to a AoS compatible client. Everything will be ready when it is ready.

There would be no update to AoS VOXLAP, as we do not have the source code.
Iceball is the only way forward.

AoS voxlap is made from to open source components to do the heavy lifting, Voxlap and Enet. it is certainly possible to recreate a client with those two.

I know I'd prefer working from a clean slate, although I can't deny the appeal of an opensource client. Combine it with a a launcher that alerts users when there is an update, and it could be pretty good. I personally prefer Iceball's method of the client basically just being a renderer, with all the game code being sent from the server. This clearly isn't safe for something like this (unless you did something like Iceball using python and added a little to the protocol so a modified pyspades server could interact with it. This would be rather limited though, unless you were to rewrite the server too.
