I don't really view 0.76 as a better version, just a newer one. I personally don't see anything wrong with 0.75 other than the slight flaws of the shotgun. The framerate difference is rather negligible. If anything, it's just the extraneous servers that deter people from what "veterans" refer to as popular gamemodes/maps. Also, people don't enjoy BRs, myself included; however, if they were to be purged, there would literally be nobody. BRs are the people that fill up the servers, for the most part. The assumption that 0.76 will not get public hacks is rather ballsy, there's more of a chance for it to happen than not.

I don't think the BR's would go away anyways, a lot of .76 servers already have them.

While .76 is a bit better, especially with the shotgun being somewhat useful, I don't know if the switch is necessary really.
fuck what was I thinking when I said that we should switch soon

Our problem arises when trying to migrate the player base to 0.76, much as Jagex had the same kind of issue trying to migrate users to 1.0, although admittedly they are two very different scenario's.

A friend TB also made a valid point "[17:45] <@TB_> I think they just go where the servers at" before trying to phase out 0.75, support for 0.76 would have to be increased exponentially.
Personally, for awhile, I didn't begin playing .76 because I couldn't! The update was too much for my pc and it not only caused lag, but it made it impossible for me to enjoy myself. DE made a perfect point when comparing the classic to Jagex's version. I believe that people aren't going to .76, because like 1.0, they can't! .75 is is barely playable by some people, and although .76 might not be as different as 1.0, it could be enough to make the game unenjoyable. (Sorry if this is a ton of rambling. Im having a hard time finding a way to make my point)

What TB said is also very important. The amount of game modes .76 supports, or at least has servers for, is not nearly as close to the amount that .75 has! Arena is probably in my top 3 favorite game modes. For awhile .76 didn't support it, so I would always play on .75 where I knew arena would be.

If we don't get back to regular client updates, the game will die (quicker).

From the first moment 0.75 was released I considered it broken, have done ever since.
I got slightly used to it, but it didn't take long for it to frustrate me and even make me stop playing; I refuse to play it these days, the odd occasion when I do try it again, I regret it within 10 minutes.

The 0.76rc came along and gave hope. It had new features, balancing correction, seemingly better hit detection/lag compensation.. a rifle that's actually accurate. It makes the game a bit more about skill instead of how fast you can spam. Of course there are still spammers in 0.76, but with the lower rate of fire and accuracy tweaks, it actually requires you to aim accurately rather than aim in the general direction and spam fire/crouch enough until one decides to hit.

The "wider community plays 0.75 more" argument is a load of bs, they play whatever is most widely available/accessible to them. If this argument had any weight at all, there would be no updates to things.. ever. 0.76 has been always been given the back seat, hence why it is not massively populated.

Regarding "0.76 has less scripts", that's rather a given isn't it? That has been the same 'problem' with every release there has ever been while pyspades has been out. It's only because there isn't massive demand on 0.76 that the creators aren't updating them. Make 0.76 in demand and the scripters will pull together and update it, even if the original author doesn't because that's how opensource works.

@tgm

All good points. Why hasn't migration happened before now?

Ask the superiors, we've been shouting at them for over a year.

I definitely think we should have 0.76 as the main game version and put 0.75 where the 0.76 server list is now. 0.76 is much more balanced and polished than 0.75, and though it isn't perfect, it's the better option.

I posted this in the admin section of the Minit forums...

I think we should do it but 76 won't promise us a full server, since not everybody plays 76.
If we have 2 more servers on 75 I could agree with one in 76.
This line of thinking is why we're still stuck on 0.75.

When 0.75 came out, everyone was playing 0.70... and then a new installer happened, the master server version was bumped, and everyone just shut up and installed 0.75. (bolded for emphasis, not in the original post --GM)

We should do something like that for 0.76:
  1. Contact all server owners to start moving some servers to protocol076.
  2. Announce that, given a week's time, 0.76 will be the main version and everyone should upgrade. Make announcement + sticky posts on the forums, and shove it up the top in BIG RED TEXT TO SAY THAT WE'RE MOVING TO 0.76 AND SHUTTING DOWN THE 0.75 MASTER SERVER ON THE XTH OF Y SO START UPGRADING NOW
  3. In all pysnip/pyspades repos, merge protocol076 into the main branch. Give instructions on how to do this, possibly via a patch.
  4. Get some good instructions for upgrading pysnip servers to 0.76 for server owners.
  5. Start moving high-visibility servers early. We should move Assault. Aloha should move pinpoint + hallway oh wait they've done that already. Maybe they could shut down a few of their 0.75 servers?
  6. Promote 0.76 as the main download.
  7. Show the 0.76 server list by default, and have a note saying "This serverlist is for 0.76. If you have 0.75 (i.e. you get lots of "Version Mismatch" messages), you can click here for the 0.75 serverlist."
  8. Get rakiru to get his server statistics from 0.76 instead of 0.75.
During this time:
  1. Server admins should gradually move servers to 0.76. Aloha could move a couple of servers a day - one every 12 hours.
On the Xth of Y:
  1. Shut down the 0.75 master server.
  2. Remove the link to the 0.75 download on the main page.
  3. Change the BIG RED TEXT TO SAY THAT WE'VE MOVED TO 0.76 AND IF YOU GET ANY VERSION MISMATCH ERRORS YOU SHOULD DOWNLOAD 0.76

Grease, have I mentioned that I love how subtle you are in expressing your ideas?
+9000 support, that's exactly what should be done.
