Not really. If you tell someone in real life that you're, say, a christian, they're unlikely to turn around and start shouting at you for it, calling you a retard and explaining why you're wrong. The pseudo-anonymity offered by the internet lets people be dicks without any real drawbacks or repercussions (in most cases).

Yeah, but if you go in a public place with a couple hundred people in there, someone is going to start shouting back at you.

Don't you mean etiologic? That is, used to explain the whys and hows of the world? Because the start of the Bible is full of those, like Adam and Eve, to explain why their society is ruled by men(Eve was created from Adam, so she was inferior) or why there are so many languages in the world(Tower of Babel), etc.
