Anyone played Freelancer by Chris Roberts? Yes? No? I advise you play it now, it's a gem.
And, once you've done that you can play the awesome Discovery mod that greatly expands on the original game. New ships, new systems, new weapons, new items and more.
Only downside, the busiest server is an RP server, well it's a bad thing if you don't like RP stuff. It can take a while to get used to.
EDIT: youtube tag didn't work. Here's a link:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D7-LdmeBw-0

That video only shows you a fraction of the action. Battles (Like one I fought in while ago (aliens vs anti-alien cult) was really epic, we had two cruisers, a battleship and a load of fighters and bombers zipping around) can get 100x more epic, you can trade and make loads of money, do mining, RP (if you really want to) etc.

To play, you'll need Freelancer installed in your computer, I'm sure you can 'get your hands on a copy' somehow.
Once that is done, follow the links and grab the mod and play:

Also, if you do end up playing this game, let me write a quick start up guide for you (when you play multiplayer):
1. Create a character
2. type /restart Liberty
3. Ask where the Helium field is
4. Hook up with some other people, if you want
5. Mine Helium and sell it at Bethlehem station

Do that until you have enough money from a Dromedary, buy that and then do some more Helium mining. Rinse and Repeat until you have enough money for a Hegemon. (That's how I started)

If you want some more tips, pop into the (should be official, but no one is coming there yet ;_;) IRC:

I've played Starlancer, Freelancer and the Discovery modification.
I'm hoping I will have a chance to play Star Citizen.
