Bocage

What is it?

Bocage is, at heart, a remake of Normandie. I feel that, however popular Normandie is, it's the least well-made of my maps. Every time I play it I can't help but notice a lot of errors that irk me, so I decided it could use a slight sprucing up with some techniques I've learned since that first foray into map-making.

The reason this has a completely different name and isn't just "Normandie 2" is twofold. First, it avoids confusion on the server-list. If it was called Normandie 2, people could mis-read it as just Normandie, and be confused when they enter a server. The second reason is that there's been so much changed from the original that I feel it's a map in its own right and not just Normandie v2.

NB: "Bocage" is the name of the land-type in Normandy - the field-and-hedgerow-filled landscape that you'll be familiar with if you watch or play a lot of WW2 films and games.

Normandie has got to be on my top five favorite maps. I love the improvements that were made! I think the wheat is especially great. Something about it just looks very neat.

Normandie is in my top 5 maps and this has just made it even better, your errors though in the map allowed players to sneak around the enemy undetected so I do think it is a bit of a double edge sword. Still great work!

Excellent as always. With mortars this should be amazing.

Amazing looking. Though it looks like as sidewalks are missing or something. I don't know it's just weird look in city. Maybe more fences around the church and in other places. I see u tried to make it similar to original Normandy. I guess you could add some more detail in city. Other than that i really like all those different fields.

Although I really don't see why it's so popular, I hope that this map plays similarly to it so fans of Normandie don't find it too different. I agree that the map overview looks 'neat' somehow - the fields remind me somewhat of Wargame: European Escalation.

Not quite sure what you mean by that - the errors I was alluding to had nothing to do with sneaking around. They were mainly some awkward staircases (like in the church and the corner shops), super-high walls and fences and pitifully small trees.

Thanks, I just hope it plays as well.

Well I'm sure that if Sham hosts this map, Hompy's mortars can work their magic on it.

I got rid of the paths on purpose. Not every Norman town and village had pavements in them and I feel it looks more natural without. I'd like to space around the church to be relatively open, which is why I go rid of the wall around it, but I can always add it in should it not play as I envisioned it. Also, what exactly do you mean by "adding more detail"?

Well i understand what you mean by no sidewalks like in this vid:

The point is that fences around the chruch would make it look more realistic since churches should have fences around them. Plus providing cover for players. Also what i meant with detail is that houses, grass and roads alone looks kinda plain. Like in that vid there could be some more bushes, boxes anything that could provide some cover.

Looks cool. Much more convincing and eye-pleasing than the original. Love the hills with acres.

Well I had wanted the church to be easier to get inside (which is why there's 3 doorways instead of 1) to encourage fighting inside it now it's about 3x the size of the Normandie church. I've not had a game in the map yet so I don't know how it plays, but adding walls can be done easily, even if the real church at Ste-Mère-Église has no wall around it. I'll also look into having other objects in the village, such as more cover, and more decorations to improve the 'feel' of the area.

Thanks! I'd love to be able to play it at some point to see what it's like in relation to Normandie. Most people don't know yet that this is a Normandie remake, so given the choice between joining a server hosting Normandie, which is map they know and (hopefully) enjoy, and a server with a new map with a strange name they've never heard of, Normandie wins out every time.

Nice twist to your classic map. Green_Happy1

It's perfect for TOW and CTF game modes. Added to the map rotation on the aloha.pk tug of war and aloha.pk ctf custom maps servers.

wow, this looks really good. I can't wait to play this!
Thanks for making maps like this influx, the game sorely needs them.
