It looks like the only way to have other people connect is if they have hamachi themselves.

yes, hamachi creates a VPN(virtual private network) where users can connect. This is good if you want to start a server but can't port forward. My only problem with hamachi is that it lacks alot of features such as only 5 per network, but you can create as many networks and there are all connect to your hamachi IP so it doesn't mean much. There is other software that makes a VPN with even more features like rooms and being able to see a server set up on a network when you are on the LAN master server for a game. Evolve even has a friends system! Though all of them work basically the same, with you starting a server and giving them your VPN IP.
