What happened to all the desert climate, foresty, ww2 style maps? They map pool back in the day was way more diverse, and I remember actually being able to vote and select the maps using the /votemap command. This command still exists but seems to be disabled on all the servers. Why? Also why are the majority of maps being played on these servers the same maps over and over? Hallway 24/7 is on 4 servers, pinpoint is on one, then you got a bunch of random maps that are too big for the amount of people playing. The only good server is the arena server because the maps are decent, but the game mode gets old. That is just my opinion. The fact that there is no diversity in maps though is something that needs to be addressed and I'm sure many people have wondered or been bothered by this.

Any insight would be appreciated thanks.

Pinpoint is actually fun. When you want to test out your mods, because it loads up quickest :) I believe it's my fault it got attention, because I test stuff on it and server gets brought up in the list, because it's not empty anymore.

Back on topic - the REASON for such low diversity of maps is lack of players. There used to be >1000 players (if I remember correctly, maybe over 3000) daily. More than 10-20 servers used to be full or almost full.
Lack of players.
Reason for that? Not updated game (I mean AoS 0.x) - 3 weapons get boring very fast, no decent A/C, also not updated engine - not configureable enough - also special effects (like explosions, block hits) could have some cheap smoke with them too, not only simple particles; also crouch spamming... The list is pretty much endless. So that's why I'm trying to update the OpenSpades (of course, the creator of OpenSpades is yvt and many others, but since their progress is very slow..)

We could actually set up a community server with zombies like in Sauerkraut and a good map. People will come, and stuff. But then, we'd need a server with a non-faggot owner.

Main issue I have with pinwayssault is that you can't trench or tunnel properly. These were strategies that were more common pre-fuck-you-guys-love-Jagex, and oddly enough tunneling is actually effective on the maps in standard 1.x, although it's notably more difficult to defend against.

They're basically AoS minus what makes AoS AoS. And as for Hallway, just add spawncamping. Y'know, that thing that used to really kill 1.x games that they ended up fixing, and by they I mean Intern Tom. (I do say that Mayan Jungle is basically hallway in disguise, but at least your engineers can put up roof cover.)

For the most part I agree with Cham, but our tastes differ. Lack of map diversity is caused by lack of players is caused by lack of actually keeping shit up to date.

And the solution isn't "make OpenSpades shinier". It's "make OpenSpades its own thing". (Followed by "actually fucking move to it", of course.)

P.S. If you're playing this on a netbook, get a real laptop? You really shouldn't use anything weaker than a GM45. Which is still a bit weak for polygonal voxel engines, but is at least worth trying to optimise something for.

It won't work. Shit has to change. And it won't change.

Yeah, I'm not promising shit's going to change, but at least I'm doing what I can do. The only reason why I didn't start working on OS earlier is that I couldn't build it, and believe me I tried it so many times (on Linux too).
Now with windows 7 and better processor (at least twice as fast), I can do it.
Though I must admit I am newbie at advanced programming, like graphics, netcode, optimizing etc. etc.
