As I just got a new High-Performance/Gaming Laptop, and I knew that a lot of you are into Gaming (obviously), I thought I'd give it a quick review in the Lounge, and get our comments/questions.

Firstly, this is it: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00L ... UTF8&psc=1 Green_Happy1

Image

I'm not posting from It now as I have to wait until the weekend to set it all up, will update as I play games/run software on it.

First Impressions:

PERFORMANCE

Windows 8.1 seems to be very fluid and responsive, and beats Windows 7 in terms of speed for me. However, I am coming from a 2012 Lenovo T520. It has a fairly beastly (at least to me) spec with a 4GB Nvida GT860M, 16GB of RAM, and a Intel Core i7-4710HQ Quad Core. It has no SSD at present, just a 1tb hard drive. 15.6" screen is OK/Good. (It's 1920x1080)

The lack of an SSD seems to let it down, and I could say that the Mouspad isn't very good. However, I am a mouse user, so that isn't an issue.

As I play more games, I will report back. Novabench gives it a score of 1063, and I have no doubt that OpenSpades will run like a beast. (Apparently BF4 will run at 90fps)

SOFTWARE & USABILITY

Lenovo thankfully seems to have kept the Bloatware down to a minimum, but it did come with Manxthon (!) installed. McAffee also had to go. Windows 8.1 isn't really that hard to get used to, and I'm sure Windows 9 will make it easier.

Setting it up was easy, and boot up time seems to be a about 20-30 secs.

Any questions/comments?

Second Impressions

I have now played OpenSpades on this, 1920x1080, with every setting maxed out. :D
Seems to go at about 50-70fps, with Firefox and Outlook and more open. Seems to be good.
I'm going to install some graphics programs on it tomorrow and see what happens.

Further Impressions (i wonder how many times i can say impressions)

Now tested Insurgency with all settings as high as pos. 60-120fps :D. Start up has increased with extra programs, but still under a minute. I can't wait go get BF4 on this. Drive Speed isn't too bad actually. (It's a step up from 20-40fps with everything very low)

One drawback... Mousepad is shit.

Quick update (13/11/14):

PC seems to be working very well, excellent FPS in everything. However, I want to speed everything up, so this (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00E ... 44B9EX5D5I) SSD is going in :D.

Might get the 4K panel in there as well if I can.

As an aside, Next Car Game: Wreckfest is excellent, here's a screenshot of mine (no edits):

This was on medium settings.

So, New Update (24/12/2014):

Got the SSD, but couldn't clone my installation across successfully. I'm going to do a clean reinstall of windows, which will probably make it faster anyway :)

Notes:

- If you are using a third party power cable, performance isn't as good as the GPU can't get enough power
- Had some driver updates and optimised my games according to GeForce experience. Excellent FPS in everything
- War Thunder and Heroes and Generals are pretty good!
- Finally getting around to getting BF4 for Christmas (Basically a present for myself)
- Cleans fairly well
- Still finding a bit of bloatware around
- Huge Hard drive, still loads of space.
- Just as fast, if not faster than when I bought it. (Apart from startup)

Some Screenshots:

Fairly Low Quality ArmA 3: (Around 110fps at that point)

Maxed Insurgency (60-100fps):

Well, I was never into the technical side, so I can't say much about these. The specs sounds good, do you have some cooling fans pad thing for laptops to use with it? Overheating can be a major issue for gaming laptops.

And just a reminder, Lenovo is mostly Chinese. And China is not exactly very trustworthy these days, let's hope that your computer didn't have a hard-wired backdoor :)

The fan runs loudly when it's doing a benchmark, we'll have to see.

Yes, I know. However I think that china probably has a hard-wired backdoor in basically everything.

Any specific reason you chose a laptop? You could have built a much better gaming desktop computer for the same price.

Not sure as I don't hear it when I play games. But am vaguely aware.

Available space, accommodation type (if you're renting someone's room), or a situation where one has to travel often for longer than a few days would make laptops more beneficial.

Yes, this is why I asked.

Do you have any hand towels?
I need to wipe the jizz off my keyboard.

Just seeing those specs is too much

That Lenovo is really a high performance laptop, x-times more powerful than mine. Well you should hope that your graphics card won't overheat as you'll play the high requirements games, or if it has some cooling system then it's ok.

BF4 is a game that has tons of fans and no wonder it does deserve it for it's graphics. Everything can be destroyed - even buildings, that is also probably fun. But, the story line in BF4 is not as good as in old Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis.

Fan seems good, if quite loud.

I'm on the fence as to BF4 now actually... Not sure about whether it's worth the money.

But the specs are ridiculous- I have OpenSpades with literally everything maxed-

Image
was that logo a sneak peek?- yes.

And the FPS doesn't drop below 55. Usually about 70.

Wtf? Open Spades Vietnam edition? Seems like you like those war related themes in games like I do.
Anyway, that's not a surprise if you can run OS on 70 fps. On my laptop i can run Aos .75 on 55 fps.. lol my laptop is a trash.
