I think a lot of us were attracted by the idea of "A War Game with Aspects of Minecraft."

I searched for games that would run on a netbook, and a link to PaulSoaresJR's AoS video popped up. So I watched it and blew my mind. THen I downloaded it and blew my mind again. I've played since then.

Somebody pointed out the Voxlap engine as a free open-source voxel engine with good performance (in contrast with Minecraft IIRC). When I looked it up, "Ace of Spades" got my attention.
Maps planned: Z-Fighting, Hallway Lite, Chaos Redux, Random Maze, FHQ Infiltration, Greece Push, Dracula's Castle, New York.

I first played the game in .60, after reading a small article in PC Gamer. It seemed like an interesting game, and I'd enjoyed Minecraft so I decided to give it a shot. Now, it's one of my favorites. I just wish I'd been around since the beginning.

I saw coestar posted a video on it back in the earlier days, thought it looked kind of cool. I was going to check it out, but I think some update for Minecraft made me forget all about it until late 0.70
