Making a server Question

I was thinking of setting up a server. What are the options?

Should I run it on a computer, etc?

What is a dedicated server?

Should it be run from home, etc?

I would appreciated answers from those who owns/have servers.

To run a server fist download the pysnipe feature server then edit the config and launch the client. Hosting the server is pretty much a matter of opinion. It is best to host it from a VPS so that you can play when ever and have it 24/7. A dedicated server means that your VPS is separate from other VPS's connected to the host, is one main computer goes down about 4/5 VPS would go down. Your VPS being dedicated would stay up as it would be its on main computer. Though if you do chose to host it from home make sure you port forward.

Well it will work from your home but you might lag a tiny bit depending on your connection speed, you would launch a server from the VPS the same way only how you get pysnipe and how you launch the server client are different.

Inregard to the question posed about hosting from home: unless you have google fiber I don't recommend it, it will seriously lag unless you want to play over lan. A VPS is a service that hosts your Ace of Spades server, they are quite difficult to use if you don't have any linux skills, however you could use a game server host for Ace of Spades.

If you can allow for roughly twice that on your home connection (assuming you want a full server), go for it.

A VPS is a Virtual Private Server - basically a remote computer that you can administrate. If they're any good they have connections that are more than capable of the required speeds. You can get a VPS running windows - they are not exclusively a linux thing, but Windows will usually cost a bit more due to licensing. If you're interested in hosting a server on a VPS, I recommend the Linux 512 from http://www.betaforce.com. I can get you a discount and set the server up exactly how you want it if you choose to go this way - PM me for details.

If I ever decided to get a vps for running a ace of spades server, what OS should I consider? Windows, Ubuntu, centos, etc?
