supernatural, mystery, action, drama and multiple POV(point of views):
Durarara!! is an anime about a highschool student who moves to Ikebukuro(downtown Tokyo). The story is very similar to SAO in the sense that it is 24 episodes and half way in the mood and pacing changes. The first 12 episodes describe different adventures with each episode having its own arc. These arcs spotlight a lot of the different charatcers, there is a lot of them too though most do not get as much time as they should, and show that everything is connected because half way through the episodes the POV switches to show the perspective of the other characters during the arc. After episode 12 & 12.5 there is only one arc. Though it is really action packed it focuses on the three highschoolers in the series which are mostly boreing but they are all hiding something from the others creating a tense atmospshere and an ending that leaves you waiting for more. Luckly there is a season 2 coming this fall.
Want something with a slowly pace? Baccano! is a series similar to Durarara!!, it is even by the same author and studio.
Baccano! came first though and the series only has 16 episodes with around 3 arcs. The arcs are all happening at the same time but in different periods in time. This allows for the series to be really re-watchable so you can fill in all the gaps. Baccano! has a lot more action featuring serial killers, immortals, and the Chicago mafia families.
psychological action ,supernatural,videogames:
No Game No Life is a mix between SAO and code geass. It centers around two genius step-siblings who always win at games. One day they accept a chalenge and are teleported to a virtual world where all conflicts are decided by games(poker, blackjack, chess, videogames,RPS,etc). Now the conflict twitches from "Will they win?" to "How will they win?". The two main characters are laos very special. You have sora(male) and shiro(female). They are both very "shy" so they can't be sperated for some reason. They each have their own strenths and weakness which counter each other making they a great team. One thing the anime does not do very well is easily describe how they win these games. I must also complement the soundtrack of this anime, the opening and ending both sound amazing!
action,si-fi,police/mystery:
Psycho-Pass is a si-fi anime about police in the distant future. The si-fi lore and technology will draw you in, the action will have you glued to the screen, and the police aspects make the show very addicting as you want to find out how the crimes and mysteries are solved. The animation is very good providing a mix of standing 2D computer animation and CGI. The story is about a future dystopia in which a government system controls how jobs and the Psyche are handled. If a person does bad stuff or has the potentail to do bad stuff then they are put in Jail. Some of these inmates have the ability to get out if they agree to work with the police to investagete crimes and hunt down people with cloudy Psycho-Passes. A Psycho-Pass is the color of your eyes that determines the likelihood of you doing a crime and your current state of mind. The series often has morale conflicts in which the characters have to decide if they want to follow the system which restricts them from carrying out the law as it might best be carried out such as killiing a killer or a victim of a rape crime because the system asks, or doesn't want them in the case with the murderer, to do it. The ending of the series can also stand on its own but allows for a second season which it will be getting this fall as well. Overall it is one you will remember.
