IIRC, he used a Mosin-Nagant with iron sights, because he was such a badass he didn't need any sniper scopes to kill those 500 Russians.

Actually he used it because
1. a scope would reflect sunlight, revealing his position to snipers
2. would force him to raise his head, making him a bigger target
3. could easily fog up and make his rifle unusable in the cold climate of Finland.

It was still pretty impressive that he did all of his killing with a unscoped rifle, but he didn't do it to show-off or to demonstrate that he was, like, dude, a real badass, it was for pragmatic reasons, like 99.9% of everything in war.

Exactly. Zhao Taofang, for an example, is credited with 214 kills made during 32 days, also without any magnifying scope at the Korean War. That's arguably more impressive, taking into account the short time frame in which he did it.
