What is the best for mapping in which situations? I've been wanting to make a map of my own for over a year now and I've seen a lot of people use different programs, such as the pyspades map editor, VoxED, Qubicle, and Blender for making maps.

Use Pyspades Map Editor to make a your terrain with height maps, then use slab6 to make your props, and then use VOXED to insert these props into your map. I'm actually midway through making a tutorial, I'm creating a map and taking screenshots to document how I did it, I should be done in a couple of days time.

Do you need a computer with a number pad to use VoxED? I have a laptop and I know there are some functions that I simply can't use because I don't have a number pad.

Unfortunately you do, you could try using blockman2d to import props. Are you any good at Minecraft world editing, I mean with programs like MCedit etc. you could create a map with MC edit, and there are a lot minecraft height mappers and terrain generators, however, you need to be able to to downgrade the map you create to Minecraft alpha & beta save format (2010 to mid 2011 save format). The new anvil format is unsupported.

Talking of Minecraft, I can't believe that game has been out since 2009, it's coming up to being 4 years old, I began playing it in mid 2010, u?

Edit: Too clarify, many of my high detailed maps I made with MCedit, however, I had a huge wealth of knowledge on how to use MCedit as by the time I started playing AoS I'd been hosting a creative minecraft server where I regularly modified the world with MCedit and did trippy things with terrain generators. If you know how to MCedit really well then you can create maps like Capitol in a fraction of the time making them using creative mode in Minecraft or godbuild mode on a pyspades would take.

I have never used MCEdit before. In fact, I thought it was discontinued. I suppose I could try to find a Minecraft Beta .jar somewhere out there and run Minecraft with that so that I could use the mcr format, but I would have to learn how to use MCEdit for that game version.

I have no idea how long I've been playing Minecraft :P

Depends purely on preference. I've tended to not really like heightmaps, and I'm also very good with GIMP, so I tend to use the bitmap converter a lot. I promised some people I would be making a tutorial soon but I had laptop problems before the semester started up again, and now I'm low on time again.
