Blender for map making? ':o

Hey guys, i was just looking around and i noticed a couple of people have said that you can make heightmaps and stuff with blender.
I was just wondering... Is it true? :d
And if so, would anybody care to post a tut for it? :3

What about Silverman's
poly2vox? That would also be useful when making maps.
