Why the new 1.0 might of been good for the game

I was reading posts made on /r aceofspades when it occurred to me that Jagex buying out AoS might have been good for the community. We all have our opinions on the matter, but after hands on experience playing 1.0, I hate it. I really do. But, look at what some of the community's response is, we band together to form this community. Ben was planning on making people buy updates. While I don't mind paying a well deserved developer, you have to admit that it would kill most of the community. Would have Ben led us down the same path as Jagex? Maybe, maybe not. But what Jagex's atrocity they call a game, unintionally bonded like minded players under the name "Build and Shoot." With a community that has been forged through hard times like Jagex, I can be sure surch a community won't die. Remember, Build And Shoot and this community wouldn't have been here if it wasn't for Jagex.

Just a thought. Any comments?

When did Ben exactly say that the "future" updates would be payed? I think you're misquoting him.

But, if that were the case anyway, we would have done a much better job that Jagex as a whole since atleast he (somewhat) listens to our suggestions. He still kept the basic features in AoS in the .76 update that we all knew and loved, instead of blindly adding turrets and drill guns.

Towards the end he was stating how we'd have to pay for 1.0+, but that was before jagex started fucking the game over.

When we have an open-source, cross platform clone, and everybody is using that, Yes I'll definitely agree the Jagex fiasco made things better in the end. I want some multiplayer games with vibrant communities, good performance on my 6 year old comp, and linux support, and this is my best chance to see/make it happen.

I asked him on IRC about a week after I finished the map Submarine, so this would have been about June, I basically asked him if the 1.0 would have a price, and he said yes. Basically 1.0 was going to be similar to 0.75, just a little bit different weapon balance, a few new features such as the machine gun and rpg, and it would use Open GL rather than Voxlap. This meant it would have been cross platform (Mac and Linux as well as windows). It would also have an ingame menu and server list, on top of that there were some cool things in store for pyspades, such as server packs, which would allow the client to tick a box in settings to install server packs. Basically a server pack is downloaded when you join a server like with the map, however it contains custom KV6, PNG and WAV files. So say I was running arena on my international space station map on my old server, I could have set it up so everyone who was using server packs would automatically have players using SIMOX's space suit skins and my laser weapons pack. It would have given servers some cool features that would have added even more ways to vary the AoS experience. Shame Jagex fucked that up big time.

So this would have led to a $10 price tag, however I think he said (this convo is 6 months ago) that he wouldn't drop support for the latest Voxlap version. And I heard somewhere that the latest Voxlap version may have been compatible so you could play on 1.0 servers, just it wouldn't have things like server packs and open gl graphics, but i'm not sure if that was someone else saying that or Ben.

In response to the overall topic of the thread, no, we could have had all the features I just listed, plus a community that isn't split down the middle, and a game that we may never get. I understand your sentiment "Communities stronger" but the community was just as strong before, rather it just shows how fucking retarded Jagex is, they had a good game and a large community that loved it, and they somehow thought that making a money grab game would be worth it, now they have a game that has shit reviews, and they have to resort to censorship and quotes from gaming articles that have been revised to criticise the game post release to get sales...

Ben said that people would be paying for AoS long before Jagex bought it from him. I don't think it would have scared away the community. Had he kept developing AoS, the updates wouldn't have gotten worse and worse, and we would be paying for a quality game in the end. Look at all the people who are saying 1.0 is a disaster who haven't even heard of the beta mode. Jages just plain ruined the game no matter ow you look at it. That's why they're doomed to fail or make big changes, and that's why the B&S community will always bee strong.

but if Ben never sold the game we would still have quality Beta updates (which we now will never get), a 3,000+ person/ day server flooding and a massive cult following. Now we got a reverse programmed version, 500 person/ day server flooding and a much smaller fanbase. Im not trying to diss the game and what we have accomplised its just it would've been nicer if the game was still owned by Ben.

This post should probably be in the 1.0 section.

Once things are settled down (almost there), then it could be a good thing that they fucked us over, but only because it was so bad that such drastic measures (separate community) had to be taken.
