I think I should qualify the above statement by saying that although we have no plans to take it offline, we are unlikely to keep the master server online indefinitely.
Mat.
The master server doesn't "allow the player hosted servers to remain online". He should really learn what a master server is for.
That second part stands out to me. I highly doubt they'll keep their master server up for any real length of time in fear that it would impact 1.0 sales.

Legitimate question, please don't mistake this for trolling, flaming, abusive behaviour, or otherwise (and I'm putting it here isntead of in a PM because you have yet to reply to my last one):
How much did the creation of a third-party master server affect the decision to keep this one up? It seems that dropping the master server was a definitive thing, until said third-party grew so large and created their own master server, which would obviously draw players who had no interest in the new version away from you and to them, as you couldn't compete.

Other peoples attempts at creating a master server had no bearing on our decision to keep the master server up. We thought it was the right thing to do. As for any source code, there are no plans to release any of our source codes.

I don't think a complete, working master server is considered an "attempt". Also, I
highly doubt our master server had nothing to do with this decision. They've been pretty determined to shut it down up to this point.

That's cool Rakiru, but when we made the decision there weren't any out.
I'm not sure if he's referring to when they originally discussed taking it down (months ago) or when they decided to keep it up (today). If the later, he's wrong, seeing as we've had a master server ready for days now.

Pyspades is having trouble connecting to their master server (at last for me). And I'm getting errors from the server list on their website. Loading up a server through buildandshoot works though.

Oh please, this is just a desperate attempt to bring back the dissenting BnS-ers. They are scared of our community; I guess we should be happy? I don't know what to think of this really.
I suppose its a bitter sweet decision. Yay for more AoS .75, boo for Jagex politics.

So that explains why most servers are so depopulated.

Even if Jagex is keeping their own master server up, you guys should give the link (or whatever is needed to connect to the master server, I'm not sure) for your own master server to server owners/hosts, anyway.
EDIT: And yes, seems like Spadille can't find any servers.

i don't think Sniped is that stupid to not understand how the master server works. he is a complete moron when it comes to almost everything else about life but i'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt and say he does have enough grey matter in his thick skull to comprehend what's going on. saying that all servers rely on the master server to work will make the majority of the idiot 5-year old infested community of new AoS lose their willingness to try to host their own servers. he's trying to divert attention from BnS and instead tell people that AoS does not exist w/o Jagex.

Spadille is currently reliant on the Jagex server list, that is why it doesn't find any servers.

I'm not big into the networking/Internet thing, but I'm smart enough to know (with a little help from good ol' wikipedia) that our friend Sniped is talking out of his ass. Anyway. Glad that they recognized that they should continue at least a little support for AoS .75...

True. Anyone remember this line from Jagex?
"Sorry if this seems unfair to you, but when you are having fun and being looked after by our CM and Player Support team as well as stable servers I hope that you appreciate the effort we are putting into this :)"
>stable servers
lmao
If they can't handle 1 lobby server... how do they plan on maintaining dozens of much more complicated, resource intensive game servers?
