Lets make "Build and shoot" game.

I am 3D artist (maps, objects, weapons), music composer (FX, soundtracks) and AOS player (skAOS, Jun, Matej, Horn3t - deuces)...
Lets make better AOS based on fast voxel engine. With strategy elements (mining iron for bullets and weapons changes, minning rocks for building material, sending medkits like "shoting someone", jetpack - mining fuel cubes, cars, planes etc etc etc). With better characters (simple but skinable from menu - character editor).
With better textures, with sky JPG, with semi-transparent cubes (leafs, grass)?
Fully opensource, free to play etc etc. With our psyspade like server app.
Super fast running on old computers...
Lets crowddevelopment this. With "BuildAndShoot" name aka "B&S".
Calling all Blue_Spade and Green_Spade to build that!!!

You might want to go take a look at Project Iceball.

Also check out Subversive Takedown. And then maybe go check out Gnomescroll. All three are projects by longtime AoS players and forum members.

I'm not even going to get into the fact that the source code is no longer available and/or existing. People can change a lot with server-side scripting... but you're just not going to be seeing much in the way of modifying the basic client.

You should use SFML/OpenGL. Just my 2 cents.

Wouldn't it be easier to just make a mod for minecraft or use already existing mods to make a mod pack?

You should use SFML/OpenGL. Just my 2 cents.
That's the current plan, if you feel like writing a renderer, go ahead.

Why? I'm guessing he doesn't have a lot of experience in writing games/3D apps, so it would probably be rather inefficient compared to an existing engine.

Woah woah woah, We have a lot different projects going on right now, but none of them is doing what actually needs to be done first, which is DOCUMENT THE PROTOCOL.

Jordach, I commend you for working on something and making it FOSS, really I do, but realize that we will never get anything done us developers at BnS are spread this thin. If you need an engine I would just fork Cube Root. It's also C++ and is lacking the networking stuff it is my understand your perused first.

Also, the admins has made clear with iceball he doesn't want a game called Build And Shoot and they do own the name.

Duff Paddy (I think that's his name) has been updating the documentation on my wiki recently. I haven't properly looked at what he's added, but he seems to know what he's talking about. Also, Jordach's project is unlikely to get anywhere, for several reasons I won't bother putting here.

Actually looking at the repo I see now Jordach hasn't committed too much. So Jordach, don't take it personally but you (as with the rest of us) are better off not working alone.

You do realise working with that pile of crap renderer that is? IT'S very difficult to work with as the mesa.vxl isnt even there, the video he posted is actually not what we actually got. WE just got trolled big time.
