GIMP (to make maps with highmap/color ).
Voxed - advance map making tool.
Qubicle constructor - verry good tool (if i had the money, I would have bought it.)
Blender - to make island etc. (by JoJoe)
If u wanna make map with Blender or GIMP u need to find the scripts to converting.
Sorry for my English.

Pyspades has a layer-based map editor, which if you can compile it is worth using. (That is, if I recall correctly).
If you can get VOXED to work without crashing, and can make sense of it, I suspect that's probably one of the more powerful tools you can use.
Mesa by Triplefox was done by making KVX files in SLAB6, then importing them in VOXED. It was from my understanding the best map around when it was made.
Of course, there's always "build a map and press F1 to save it". That does take bloody ages, though, but if you pair it up with a heightmap converter it should be much quicker.
Personally I've just written scripts to spit out vxl files.
I'm hoping to include a decent map editor with Iceball (and it has an icemap to vxl converter in the trunk, which seems to work fine). Y'know, one which has the good ol' Minecraft WorldEdit stuff. The GUI stuff that Triplefox is working on might be useful here.

Hmm, is there a Minecraft to AoS converter anywhere? It might be worth creating one (perhaps a Bukkit plugin that relies on a WorldEdit selection or something).

There is, in fact, a MC2VXL converter. You can find version 3
here. Not really sure where v4 would be lurking these days. Some info on how to use it appears
here as well as
here. It wasn't the easiest of programs to use though.
Also, as for using Voxed, I suggest two things.
1. Print out the voxedhlp.txt file. It helps a LOT.
2. Install
Voxed Companion. It modifies the control keys to make it a bit more intuitive, although it does make some of the normal control keys inaccessible. You can turn it off temporarily to access those other functions.
