I have always preferred classicgen to most custom maps.
People have to build stuff instead of relying on the current prefabs.
You couldn't sprint up hills. I saw few people would spend half a match making a roadway for faster travel.
Sneaking- you had a big map and god forbid if someone didn't check around the map corners for a flanker sitting on the other side of the hill otherwise you would lose your intel in 5 minutes. With half the maps now (lookin at you hallway and pinpoint) sneaking has been reduced to crouching in the ocean or tunneling, neither taking much skill or being much fun.
It was generally just more interesting.
So why does everyone use custom maps, especially hallway. Half the populated servers will have hallway on sometimes, a horrendous map that makes my eyes hurt and stunts gameplay to running in an alley and getting shot at from above if the enemy get top wards first and shoots your stairs out.
Why no love for classicgen?

The problem was that most of the servers that hosted the map 24/7 were all the same. Just a random classicgen map running CTF with little or no players online.
The only 24/7 Classicgen server that has succeeded since custom maps came out was Genwars, and that was because it hosted Territory Control, which condensed players without using a shitty map. Even then it was kind of hit and miss on weekdays and hackers still got through occasionally.
To succeed there needs to be a server with constant moderation, some kind of gimmick (in Genwars case TC), and a mature community. We really don't have many of those servers now.
