It isn't necessarily that they are atheists, it is just that they replace other religions with Communism. They force people to see the State and your assorted Dear Leader/Supreme President/Most Victorious Dictator as a god, because they fear organized religions will try to take some of that sweet power cake for themselves.
This is a generalization, however, as there are quite a lot of different communist "denominations". Some are internationalists, some are nationalists, some accept certain religions, some see religion as a whole as something bad that will compete with the State for power, etc.
btw, the opposite is true, to some extend: A Papal bula prohibited any Catholic from becoming a communist, lest they be excommunicated.

My Russian neighbor told me when he was growing up he was told from a child and all throughout his public education there that there is no god and if someone was found to be practicing a religion they no longer were allowed to be educated.
