The more publicity a movie gets, the crappier it will be. It usually seems that the movies nobody knows of are brilliant movies, while the movies that your hear people talking about frequently turn out to be crappy movies.

Have you seen the Hobbit? Lord of the Rings? Les Miserables?

All excellent movies that had high publicity.

I think this is just confirmation bias. You see some good movies that aren't very popular. And you see some bad movies that are popular. Then you start thinking that most low-budget movies are great while the high budget ones generally aren't.

No, I'm basing this of ratings. The unknown movies always get the highest scores.

That's because the only people who actually rate those movies are the ones that know about them, and the only people that know about lesser-known movies are those that either go looking for them or follow the director/studio/whatever, meaning more of the raters are fans of the movie.

Either way, this theory is pretty shit - I could easily list hundreds of movies that contradict it.
