Linux is actually a kernel, but what you are talking about are Linux distros. These are operating systems such as Ubuntu, Debian, Linux Mint, Fedora, Arch Linux, etc. These are free and open-source, and can run on any x86-based PC. These are an alternative to your usual operating systems like Windows and Mac OSX.

Then you must be using Google search incorrectly.

It is a different Operating System. It does things slightly different than MS Windows but for a general user they probably wouldn't be able to tell much of a difference.

It's funny because he lives in the United States.

Zeb, you're an idiot.

Now yes, I know this "isn't helpful or constructive" or whatever, but honestly guys, this is like asking what Russia is.

I have no reason to defend zeb or to tell any of you to grow up but I will anyway. Zeb is a young American teenage who goes to school like most kids these days. A majority of young Americans do not know too much about computers so of course zeb would not know too much about operating systems. All I am saying is give him some credit for coming here for help instead of acting like a bunch of idiotic monkeys who just found a banana. Do you really enjoy causing people anger and confusion that much Vezok?

1Shot and altoids have pretty much answered you question fully and dan gave a bit more information on the subject. I see no reason for you guys to continue to act this way, just lock this and be done with it.

Well, on my first search on Google I found a plethora of information on Linux distros. Anyways, regarding what Jdrew said, this thread is remaining open until it becomes a problem. I see no reason to lock it. Next, I do admit that most Linux distros take some getting used to if you are moving from Windows. It adds a new range of capabilities and organization that is not found on Windows. In most cases, it is less cluttered than Windows, faster than Windows, and lets you do a bunch more stuff that Windows doesn't let you. But on the othe hand, you actually have to understand your computer. Most of it isn't dumbed down for you like Windows is. For lack of a better phrase, there is a "learning curve" to it. Most things do actually require some looking up on Google for. Don't use any Linux if you want to be spoon fed on how to use it. But with that being said, the majority of Linux distros that I have used are a hell of a ton faster than an average Windows computer. I definitely suggest learning to use it. Plus, it's free. (Unlike Windows where you have to buy a $100 disc)

As many have already said, Linux is an operating system(wait, no, Linux itself is an kernel, operating systems based on this kernel like Ubuntu is different), like Windows or Mac OSX. It does have many advantages over both Mac and Windows, but it requires a good amount of knowledge to use, a "learning curve" as Lemon has stated. It's also free-of-charge.(Well, that doesn't count if you're using pirated copies, ha!)

I can actually say that I am in the exact same boat as him. So this isn't some complex I have, but rather, a genuine confession of my inner thoughts.

tl;dr
It's an operating system like Windows or Mac OS, don't try and use it if you don't know what it is.

(Ps on what Dan said, there's lots of eyecandy in Linux, but if you intend on just playing games, definitely stick with windows, Linux can get complicated.
