Lol, you don't even get papers till at least the 11th grade and even then they are like one to three paragraphs.
Lolwtf.

My first high school assignment was a 3 page paper on the effect of fate in my life. I just finished sophomore year and I've been given multi-page essay assignments regularly.

I don't know where you go to school, but wherever it is, they need to step their game up.
Did you actually learn anything from that paper? I never learned anything from any of mine. I never got an actual research paper until i got to college classes and even those I just used big words on... never really learned anything... The school system doesn't need more/harder work. Very few people learn anything useful from it anyways. I highly doubt in my lifetime I will actually need to know how to convert an equation in terms of sine and tangent to terms of cosine. Anywho, I like the the progression of this thread.

Well no, I wouldn't say I learned anything from that paper specifically, mostly because I didn't agree with the subject of discussion but that's another matter entirely.

Besides, the point of essays in general isn't to learn something per se. But rather to put to words what you have learned. An essay is a means to create a channel where you can more fully absorb, comprehend, and understand the information you have gathered or been given.

So yes, I suppose that writing essays does help me to understand a particular subject in my class.

That's not the point. All pre-college arithmetic and mathematics courses are not necessarily designed to teach you about that particular subject matter. You're partially correct, I do doubt that you will need to understand Trig functions in order to get on with your life. Most people won't. That's not why they teach it. All math courses before you get to college, with the exception of Algebra and basic arithmetic functions (addition, subtraction, division, multiplication) are only there to expand a particular area of the brain's processes. Specifically the part that is connected to logical, analytical, and objective thinking.

Obviously in your future, and the future of most people, you won't be solving too many Trig equations. But everybody needs the skills of logic and analysis to succeed, and it just so happens that math is a brilliant platform for these types of thinking.

Afrodude is not only entirely correct, but did a superb job of writing out his sentiments.

You summed it up well, Afrodude. Most of what being teached in schools nowadays won't help you in the future(until college, obviously), it only helps you to use your brain properly.

Yup, I totally agree, but I would rather have HS setup to be more focused on the area you actually want to do. If I for instance wanted to be a journalist (I hate journalism) they should have more classes focused on that, so you don't have to spend 16+ years in school just to get a decent job.

Once you're in HS you should be able to comprehend a decision to at least be able to have a slight idea as to what you might want to do one day.

We're talking about teenagers here
if they were to choose according to what they really want half of them would be porn actors and professional booze drinkers™.

it works like that here, pretty much everyone takes a course, changes and loses 1 year of school because they thought the course would be great since most of friends took it/they liked it/they had grades that justified taking it but wasn't what they really wanted or they found it too hard

that and everyone's so fucking dumb i just felt like killing myself most of the time

I, listening to music in maths class, was the only one answering correctly ok

They have a system in Europe where you choose what general field you are mostly interested in or aiming for, and you go to a specialized (that may be too strong a word) school that focuses on what you want, or at least does not have classes that have nothing to do with what you are studying for, and it seems to be working.

ex: "I wish to become a doctor" = no 'philosophy', 'architecture', 'carpentry' or 'drama' classes

I can only fear what would happen if some american kids were given the ability to dictate in part what the rest of their lives would consist of, for some of the reasons you listed '='

Europe is a big place son. Each country does it differently.

I was referring to Europe as a general envelope. I don't know or care exactly what countries do what.

And don't call me 'son'.
