Umm, it is Linux. Or rather a flavor thereof. VALVe has stripped down all of the usual OS functions to make it more efficient and create what is basically a Steam centered console OS.

For PC.

(and maybe a console)

Yes, an operating system specifically for steam; I'll use it alongside my operating system specifically for web browsing (kidding, I don't have ChromeOS or OS X)

Also, your KDR sucks Pulley.

Why would it run Windows when it could run SteamOS? You're silly.

I hope this doesn't turn out horrible. I could definitely see this turning into something gimmicky and nasty, which is basically how everything gaming-related that is not a game its self ends up.

I can see two options,
1. The world dies because it's so awesome.
2. The world dies 'cause it sucks

Either way to world dies soooo.....

I would argue even games themselves these days are. Though, even if this is, it's extremely interesting. I really want to see how this plays out.

I'm excited about it. The built-in streaming technology is intriguing:
You can play all your Windows and Mac games on your SteamOS machine, too. Just turn on your existing computer and run Steam as you always have - then your SteamOS machine can stream those games over your home network straight to your TV!
Sounds similar to a localized concept of OnLive, which means you'll only need one powerful computer to run demanding games on all of your other weak devices.

And it'll actually have a chance of taking off, since Valve is extremely popular.
