Minecraft... In Retrospect

My experience with minecraft. There is TL;DR at the bottom of the post for lazy people :P

I know there must be a minecraft thread already, but I wanted to start a new one because I wanted to talk about my experience with it from day one, and also I think the other one is dead anyway.

Minecraft was the first person game I ever played. I remember on my first world I just got stuck in a cave, and had to tunnel out with my fists :P

After that, I made a proper world and soon I started to thrive. It was on a little island, and I found these massive caves which I built a city in. This was in beta 1.2, just before beds were implemented.

I made a server around 1.4 (rented because I was a technical noob; I still kind of am) and had lots of fun with my friends, who promptly de-friended me across every social networking service they knew me across (steam, email and twitter... I think) after they got bored of Minecraft around 1.9. bastards

Yesterday I got a sudden pang of nostalgia and decided to watch the complete yogscast's Shadow of Israphel. Oh, dem memories. I mean, heh, their content was never excellent but by god has it decreased over the past few months. Instead of it being childish, vulgar and witty at times, it's now childish, vulgar and completely devoid of intelligence.

So I redownloaded minecraft, and started it up. What had happened to it? Holy Bejesus, jungles and temples and pre-built structures all over the place! What? This isn't the minecraft I know anymore! We used to build massive houses and sub-terrain theme parks, but now there seems to be none of that. Just... spells and crap. I mean, honestly, spells!? SPELLS!? That isn't minecrafty at all! And by spells I mostly mean 'enchantments' :P

So I downloaded 1.3.jar and started a new world.

Personally, I think 1.3 to 1.8 is far superior to the newer versions, just because they're simpler, yet more fun because of something I like to call *insert obnoxious 9gag gif here* imagination! We used to pretend that spells and pre-built structures existed, the gap of these things were there for us to fill in with our own lore and stories.

TL;DR: Minecraft used to be good because IMAGINATION and new minecraft is bad because TOO MUCH STUFF ARGH MY EYES

Discuss below.

It's funny because in the early days of Minecraft people kept demanding updates for new stuff to be added to the game. Jaded users even attempted to DDoS Notch. Now some keep saying the game is ruined because there's too much stuff in it.

I for one, no matter what version the game is, am glad a game like Minecraft exists. It's a good game.

I just feel that it's changed beyond recognition. I would really like the current Mojang team to update the launcher so you can play any version you want (I think they said they were working on that back in September).

But yeah, minecraft is a wonderful game. It's literally inspired an entire generation to be creative.

it just got boring for me, nothing that was added really made me want to play it more. the magic stuff is kind of dumb and the combat system is still terrible, but I think a lot of the new things they added are cool

Yeah, agreed with priok. The game is fun when you start a new world but after some time playing you just get to a point where it gets boring. Exploration is the main draw of the game but everything seems to be the same after you've seen a little. Oh, look a jungle. Nice, a desert. Oh, look, another jungle, and with a plain just after and then another jungle but this time with an USELESS TEMPLE :DDDD and then tundra, some plains... it just gets tired. There used to be some amazing natural structures, mountains, beautiful views from the top of mountains, back in Alpha and early Beta, but now I never see any of those.

The new stuff has been making people think that the game is some sort of linear rpg with building. Which is stupid.

It's not like you can ignore any of that stuff and just build in creative or whatever. In all honesty I think the game has done nothing but improve since the earlier beta.

I disagree. While I do like many of the changes, and the fact that I don't need most of it to advance, I'd really like to have the world generation from earlier versions. I don't have a problem with jungles and other biomes by themselves, I'm talking about the shape of the terrain by itself.

You're right, the landscapes do seem to be much less interesting now.

After 1.0 release, minecraft started all the crap updates, nothing good ever came after potions except for the concept or horses which didn't even work, they're adding all of this crap nobody wants, or stuff that's unfinished, just so that people won't leave them and it's really stupid, personally the only time I play minecraft is when I'm playing 1.8 beta with my friends...

You people say things that seem to imply that 'updating' the game seems to be a bad thing.

It's fucking not.

It's just a matter of opinion. You don't like how the game works/looks/feels now? that's you're opinion. You might share the same opinion with countless others, but that's their opinion as well. Stop whining.

We're (I'm) not whining, we're (I'm) just saying that we (I) preferred it before all the updates.
Also it's pretty ironic that you're like:

Then you say:

It means it's not a bad thing that the game updates for better or otherwise. If you think it's bad then that's your opinion.

You may not be taking the hipster train on this one but:
